Elk Island National Park is located one hour east of Edmonton, off Highway 16 but the drive is worth it. The park is huge – 75 square miles - and is Canada's only National Park completely surrounded by a fence. Established in 1906, this wilderness paradise is home to some of Canada's most endangered species such as plains bison and wood bison.

You’ll most likely see moose, elk, deer beavers and coyotes while driving through the park. In addition, at least 230 species of birds including the trumpeter swan and herons can be found within the park's boundaries. Summertime camping spots are available, as is hiking and cross country skiing. Be sure to visit the Visitor Center where you’ll gain lots of insight into the park and its inhabitants.
